The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is an index that tracks 30 large, publiclyowned blue chip companies trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the NASDAQ. The Dow Jones is named after Charles Dow, who created the index back in 1896, along with his business partner Edward Jones.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average is the second oldest U.S. market index after the Dow Jones Transportation Average, which contains 20 transport stocks such as railroad and trucking companies. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was designed to serve as a proxy for the broader U.S. economy.
The S\u0026P 500 or Standard \u0026 Poor’s 500 Index is a marketcapitalizationweighted index of the 500 largest U.S. publicly traded companies. The index is widely regarded as the best gauge of largecap U.S. equities. Other common U.S. stock market benchmarks include the Dow Jones Industrial Average or Dow 30 and the Russell 2000 Index, which represents the smallcap index.
The S\u0026P 500 has more largecap stocks than the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The Dow tracks the share price of 30 companies that best represent their industries. Its market capitalization accounts for almost onequarter of the U.S. stock market. The Dow is the most quoted market indicator in the world.5
The S\u0026P 500 has fewer technologyrelated stocks than the Nasdaq. As of June 28, 2019, 55% of Nasdaq allocations are in information technology compared to 24.4% for the S\u0026P 500.6 The Nasdaq also includes the stocks of companies that are privatelyowned.
Despite these differences, all these stock indexes tend to move together. If you only focus on one, you will still be able to understand how well the stock market is generally doing. In other words, you don’t have to follow all three.
