This video explains what measurement (or construct) validity is. Several types of measurement validity are discussed: face validity, predictive/criterion validity, convergent/discriminant validity. You also learn how to use a multitrait multimethod matrix to assess convergent/discriminant validity.

This video looks what validity means in practice.
It is not possible to simply say a test is valid but rather if it is valid for a particular purpose. A placement, progress or certificated exit test all perform different functions and need appropriate test designs. Another aspect of validity to consider is who is taking the test. Are they children, teenagers or adults? For a test to be valid, it needs to account for the different needs, cognitive abilities and characteristics of the test taker. What a test taker is tested on is known as the test construct. A test construct could be communicative language ability, or speaking ability or as specific as spoken fluency. The challenge is to define the construct and find ways to elicit the appropriate language skills and measure them. For example, if testing the construct of spoken fluency, the test could include features such as rate of speech, number of hesitations and the extent to which any hesitations cause strain for a listener.
